Aura Bogado is joining Injustice Watch as a senior reporter. Her work will explore the ways the courts impact immigrants in Chicago and Cook County.
Bogado, formerly a senior reporter and producer at The Center for Investigative Reporting, is a groundbreaking investigative journalist who exposed the forced drugging of migrant children, uncovered a military contractor’s confinement of children in vacant office buildings, and documented the lasting consequences of prolonged detention. She specializes in sourcing and elevating the perspectives of those most affected by the practices and policies she investigates. Previously, she focused on environmental justice as a staff writer at Grist, and was a news editor at Colorlines.

Bogado’s work has earned her an Edward R. Murrow Award, a Hillman Prize, and an Investigative Reporters and Editors medal. She was a 2021 data fellow at the University of Southern California’s Center for Health Journalism, and a 2022 Andrew Carnegie Fellow. Her reporting has appeared in the Los Angeles Times and Teen Vogue, and on PBS NewsHour. She’s currently working on a book about migrant children.
“We are now at a critical crossroads in the lives of immigrants, and we couldn’t be more excited to have one of the country’s foremost reporters on the issue join us to help spotlight how our court system is coping with it,” said Injustice Watch investigations editor David Kidwell. “Aura’s work has been inspiring, and we can’t wait to get started.”
At Injustice Watch, Bogado will investigate federal proceedings at Chicago Immigration Court and how immigrants interact with the Circuit Court of Cook County.
“After years of covering national stories, I’m excited to bring my investigative experience to Cook County, where immigration and other critical issues have profound impact,” Bogado said. “Rigorous local journalism is a foundation for community accountability and transparency, and I’m eager to engage with diverse communities to focus on in-depth investigations that address the region’s most pressing challenges.”
Bogado joins our team on May 1.
