Maggie Sivit, a multimedia journalist who specializes in community-centered journalism, is joining Injustice Watch as the organization’s new engagement editor.

Sivit spent the last four years as the digital and engagement producer for WBEZ’s “Curious City,” a show that answers listeners’ questions about Chicago and the region.

There, she developed strategies to strengthen relationships with audiences across platforms, produced multimedia visuals, edited web articles, and answered questions from Chicagoans about everything from feral cats to Chicago’s “ugly law.”

Sivit played a key role in launching Curious City’s neighborhood series, a multi-year engagement project that expanded the show’s reach in different Chicago neighborhoods. Each installment of the series involved asking residents what they wanted to know about their neighborhood, working with reporters to produce stories based on their answers, and organizing live events to bring the stories back to the residents who inspired them. She also collaborated with Injustice Watch on a Curious City episode about judicial elections. Her 2023 story about the history of Chicago’s Cuban community received the Engaging History award from Hearken.

“Maggie is an incredible journalist and storyteller who is skilled at building community and bringing the audience into the reporting process,” said Injustice Watch Managing Editor Jonah Newman. “We’re so excited for her to join our team and help us expand our reach.”

Sivit will lead Injustice Watch’s audience engagement strategy, working to deepen the organization’s relationship with the community and build new audiences in digital and offline spaces.

“I’m a longtime admirer of Injustice Watch’s powerful reporting,” Sivit said. “I couldn’t be more thrilled to join this team, help their investigations reach new audiences, and learn about the information wants and needs of the communities they serve.”

Originally from Cleveland, Sivit is a graduate of the University of Chicago and has lived in Chicago since 2010. She currently lives in Logan Square with her partner and their three cats. She enjoys salsa dancing, rock climbing, and spending time at public libraries.

Her first day will be Sept. 23.
